Job Description:
Operates the computer system and peripheral equipment by operating instructions, and monitors system performance throughout the duration of job runs. Includes starting on-line system, observing machine and control panel on the console for difficulties, reporting errors and restarting system, as required. Liaises with Shift Leader and concerned section to resolve problems.
Responsibilities
Carries out all or any combination of the following computer operations duties as assigned
Reviews job schedule at the start of shift as related to an assignment from Shift Leader obtain tapes from the assigned scheduler and loads input, output, tapes and disc and files as appropriate. Checks Job Control Language (JCL) and tape assignment numbers adjust volume numbers, and updates required information or headings through the console.
Prepares and sets peripheral equipment, such as printers, magnetic tape decks, exchangeable disc storage equipment, and graphic plotters. Includes loading printers with proper paper according to run instructions and to monitor operation and output.
Monitors and controls the computer to process Commercial Operations, Engineering or other data, by a computer operating task sheet. Maintains vigilant observation of machine and control panel on computer console for error alerts, responding to messages/queries on the console, and checking print out for completion, error messages, machine stoppages and faulty outputs. Investigates causes of interruptions in processing or faulty outputs, traces likely cause of failure and takes corrective action. Reports action to Shift Leader or consults with him in new or more complex situations.
Checks all computer output to ensure proper completion and compliance with established standards, splits completed jobs when more than one program is being run, completes run request form and passes to Data Control Unit for checking and distribution.
Caries out functions associated with computer operation, such as recording operating times and job/tape movements, updating program library, recording machine faults labeling files, etc.
Carries out basic maintenance on peripheral equipment, such as cleaning tape drives before and after using, cleaning printers, and loading paper.
Schedules work received from sections to optimize machine utilization. Records job assignments in Job Register. Verifies previous day’s production record against Register and forwards to Data Control Unit.
Carries out other similar or related duties, such as assisting in training new operators, maintaining computer room in a clean and tidy condition, and observing safety precautions. Observes rules regarding security and confidentiality of data inputs and outputs and the physical security of media, etc.
Requirement:
Diploma in computer Science.
4 years’ experience in computer operations, including one year of formal training in computer operations.
Skills:
Fair knowledge of English.
